When it comes to models, people don’t really think deeper than “Oh, what a pretty face”. I mean it’s true isn’t it? You pick up your issue of Bazaar, flip through the pages to see the clothes, and the articles on beauty and yadda yadda yadda. But when it comes to the models, people really have no clue.
The modeling and casting aspect of the fashion community is a world on it’s own. The political game of pre-casting, casting, booking, dealing with agents, forecasting, etc. And every season we see faces come and go, sort of one-hit wonders that never really clung on to break the mold as a model.
I think in the industry today, it’s really refreshing to see such a diverse group of women and girls who have become successful as models. You have Freja, frail body, easygoing style, cute as a button face, but then you also have Eniko, well toned body with a sexy allure. Liu Wen’s adorable dimples and upbeat vibe, Abbey’s quirky face, Stam’s ridiculously blue eyes, Natasha’s everything. All very different girls.
There’s not so much this yearning for the perfect girl anymore. No more Prada’s armada of Russians. I think these days, designers and people in general want to see girls and guys that are quite normal, that have an energy about them that can captivate you but at the same time make you feel like you know them in a way. Girls and guys with a story to tell. Like a Karlie Kloss who was plucked out of St. Louis or a Lindsay Wixson who grew up in Kansas, and drove all the way to LA to pursue a career. And now look at them.
The trend of models come and go, that is obvious. But you know, I quite like what I see when I flip through the pages of a magazine, and all this diversity is really present. I hope it stays this way for a long time.
